Adult Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Farnworth, Bolton

If you've never trained before, you're in good company. Most of the adults who walk through our doors have never rolled in their life, and a fair few were nervous about it. BJJ looks intimidating from the outside — all that grappling and submissions — but the way we teach it, you're not getting thrown into deep water on day one. You start with fundamentals: how to move, how to escape bad positions, how to control someone bigger than you using leverage instead of strength. The submissions come later, once the basics are second nature.

We run both Gi and No-Gi classes through the week, which is one of the things that sets a proper BJJ programme apart from a gym that just bolts grappling onto its timetable. Gi training — in the traditional jacket and trousers — teaches grips and control that translate directly into self-defence and into No-Gi. No-Gi strips that away and speeds things up; it's closer to what you'd see in MMA. Training both makes you a more rounded grappler, and most of our long-term members end up doing a mix of each.

A typical week looks like this:

  • Monday: Gi (6am), Gi Fundamentals (6:30pm), Gi Comp Class (8pm)

  • Tuesday: Gi (10:30am), Wrestling (6:30pm), No-Gi (7:30pm)

  • Wednesday: No-Gi (6am), No-Gi Technical (10:30am), Gi Fundamentals (6:30pm)

  • Thursday: No-Gi (7:30pm)

  • Friday: No-Gi (6am), No-Gi Comp Rounds (10:30am)

  • Saturday: No-Gi Fundamentals (11:30am), Open Mat Rolling (12:30pm)

  • Sunday: Gi (12:30pm)

If you're new, the Fundamentals and Technical sessions are the best place to start — they're built around teaching rather than live rolling, so you'll get proper instruction time before anyone asks you to spar. Once you've got a few weeks under your belt, Open Mat on Saturday is a relaxed, no-pressure way to just roll and put what you've learned into practice. For anyone with their eye on competition, the Comp Class and Comp Rounds sessions are exactly what they sound like, higher intensity, more live rounds, geared toward people prepping for tournaments.

They're open to all members, not just competitors, if you want to test yourself.Membership: Adult Unlimited BJJ runs £70/month for full access to Gi, No-Gi, and Wrestling classes, or £85/month if you want MMA and Judo thrown in too. New to BJJ?
